Early Detection and Screening
Pancreatic cancer is known as the world’s toughest cancer. Most pancreatic cancer patients are diagnosed at stage IV, which is why survival rates for this disease are so low. There is still very little known about the causes of pancreatic cancer and there are currently no effective screening tests for the disease.
Challenges arise in the early detection of this cancer, in part, because of its location deep within the abdomen. Pancreatic cancer may cause no symptoms, or the symptoms are vague and similar to other illnesses.
“Unlike other types of cancers, it is very rare to catch pancreatic cancer in the earlier stages when it can be effectively treated and cured. It does not have early clinical warning signs or well-established screening protocols, which results in late diagnoses and such poor outcomes.”
Given these realities, we invest in impactful research that uses new methods and technologies to better understand the causes of this disease so we can better prevent it and to find new and novel ways to detect the disease at earlier stages to improve survival rates.
We also work hard every day to increase awareness about the signs and symptoms of the disease among the general public and healthcare professionals. Through social media, online resources and high-impact alliances, we share information to empower people to take control of their health and advocate for themselves.
Furthermore, about 10% to 20% of pancreatic cancers are hereditary or familial so taking action to detect cancer in people at increased risk is another way to help find the disease at earlier stages. That’s why we also advocate for improved access to genetic testing for people at high risk for the disease.
With each investment and each endeavour, we aim to shift the narrative around pancreatic cancer from the well-held notion that it is a death sentence, to it being a treatable and survivable cancer.
